Three people from Mississippi have filed a class-action lawsuit against Elon Musk's xAI and SpaceX. The plaintiffs allege that noise from a power plant supplying energy to data centers has caused health issues and decreased property values. Although filed by three individuals, the lawsuit represents over 10,000 local residents.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI and space technology company SpaceX have come to the forefront with a new lawsuit filed in the USA. Three people living in the state of Mississippi filed a federal lawsuit, claiming that the power plant supplying energy to the facilities operated by the companies has negatively affected thousands of people living in the area.

ALLEGED THAT NOISE NEGATIVELY AFFECTS LIFE

In the petition filed at the federal court in Oxford, Mississippi, it was stated that noise from gas turbines supplying energy to data centers negatively affects the daily lives of residents.

The plaintiffs claimed that the "constant, unavoidable, and pervasive" noise leads to health problems, emotional distress, and a decline in quality of life. It was also among the allegations that there have been significant losses in the market value of homes.

COULD INVOLVE MORE THAN 10,000 PEOPLE

Although the lawsuit was filed by three individuals, it carries the nature of a class action on behalf of more than approximately 10,000 residents.

The petition argued that rapid growth in the artificial intelligence sector has had unforeseen consequences on surrounding communities. It was claimed that thousands of people are exposed to noise and vibration for most of the day.

DEMAND FOR COMPENSATION AND DISGORGEMENT OF PROFITS

While the plaintiffs demanded compensation for the financial and emotional damages they suffered, they also requested the recovery of profits allegedly obtained from the companies' operations.

Documents submitted to the court alleged that necessary measures to reduce noise were not taken and that the companies acted negligently.

NO STATEMENT FROM COMPANIES

xAI, SpaceX, and xAI's affiliate MZX Tech were named as defendants in the lawsuit. However, Elon Musk's name was not directly included among the defendants.

The companies have not yet responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit.

$20 BILLION FACILITY AT THE CENTER OF CONTROVERSY

According to the case file, with the support of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, xAI carried out an investment exceeding $20 billion for artificial intelligence and data center investments in the Southaven area.

It was stated that the gas turbines in the region supply energy to both the data centers and related technology facilities.

NAACP LAWSUIT ALSO CONTINUES

xAI's operations in Southaven had previously been subject to legal processes. The NAACP, one of the leading civil rights organizations in the USA, filed a separate lawsuit against the company in April.

In that case, the company was accused of violating environmental regulations, while the US Department of Justice had signaled that it might intervene in the case. The Department stated that the case raises important legal and political questions about the role of public authority in artificial intelligence infrastructure investments.

AI INVESTMENTS BRING NEW DEBATES

The latest lawsuit has brought discussions about the environmental and social impacts of rapidly growing artificial intelligence investments in the USA back to the agenda. While residents argue that their quality of life has decreased, technology companies continue new infrastructure investments to meet increasing energy needs.
