Following the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, a vice-presidential election is being held at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Nuri Aslan, the candidate of the CHP, and Zeynel Abidin Okul, the candidate of the AK Party, competed in the election. In the third round of voting, Nuri Aslan was elected as vice president, reaching an absolute majority with 177 votes.
The Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was suspended from duty by the decision of the Ministry of Interior following his arrest in a 'corruption' investigation. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council convened today to elect a vice president upon the decision of the Istanbul Governorship.
TWO CANDIDATES COMPETED
For the vice presidency, the candidate of the CHP group was Nuri Aslan, while the candidate of the AK Party was Zeynel Abidin Okul. In the first round of the meeting, which started at 1:00 PM, the CHP group's candidate Nuri Aslan received 173 votes, while the AK Party's candidate Zeynel Abidin Okul received 123 votes. 5 votes were also counted as invalid. In the first round, which lasted 56 minutes, a two-thirds majority of the total number of members could not be achieved, so a second round was held. In the second round, Nuri Aslan received 177 votes, and Zeynel Abidin Okul received 125 votes.
NURI ASLAN BECAME VICE PRESIDENT
In the election held in the third round, Nuri Aslan received 177 votes, and Zeynel Abidin Okul received 125 votes. As a result of the third round, where an absolute majority was sought, Nuri Aslan, the candidate of the CHP, was elected as the Vice President of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
WHO IS NURI ASLAN?
He was born in 1969 in Sivas. He completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul and his undergraduate education in the Department of Naval Architecture (Marine Engineering) at Yıldız Technical University in 1990. He served as General Manager in a private company.
Between 1999 and 2004, he served as a Municipal Council Member in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul. Between 2009 and 2017, he was the Deputy Chairman of the Red Crescent Küçükçekmece, and from 2014 to 2018, he held the position of Chairman of the Board of the Beylikdüzü Industrialists and Business People Association (BEYSİAD). He was a Board Member of the Istanbul Federation of Industrialists and Business People (İSİFED) from 2014 to 2021 and served as the Deputy Chairman of the Sivas Koyulhisar and Villages Service Foundation (KODAV) from 2009 to 2020. He was a member of the Executive Board of the Beylikdüzü City Council from 2011 to 2019.
Aslan, who was elected as a member of the Beylikdüzü Municipality and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council between 2019 and 2024, was re-elected as a member of the Beylikdüzü Municipality and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council in the local elections on March 31, 2024. As of April 15, 2024, he was elected as the 1st Vice President of the Council through a vote held in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council. He is married and has three children.
