With the discovery of one more lifeless body on the ship that capsized in Kyrenia, the death toll rose to 13, and search efforts for 15 people are ongoing.
Efforts continue to locate the missing people from the passenger ship that capsized while sailing from Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to Mersin's Taşucu Port. Most recently, with the recovery of one more lifeless body, the death toll has risen to 13.
IDENTITIES OF TWO PEOPLE FOUND YESTERDAY HAVE BEEN DETERMINED
TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel had shared the latest situation regarding the efforts carried out following the sea accident that occurred off the coast of Kyrenia.
Üstel, stating that the identification efforts for the two female bodies reached at the shipwreck this morning have been completed, said, "As a result of the work carried out by our Police Organization, it was determined that the bodies belonged to Şerife Özdemir and Nazmiye Özbolat, and the necessary information was given to their families."
Üstel wished God's mercy upon the deceased Şerife Özdemir and Nazmiye Özbolat, and patience and condolences to their families and loved ones.
SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORTS CONTINUE
The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) reported that search and rescue efforts continue for the ship that sank off the coast of Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
In a post made on the Ministry's social media account, it was stated, "Search and rescue efforts for the capsized ship off the coast of Kyrenia are being continued by the Naval Forces' TCG Işın rescue and salvage ship and TCG Alemdar rescue ship."
The post also included photographs from the efforts.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The high-speed passenger ship named "Filo Jet," operating between Kyrenia Port in the TRNC and Taşucu Port in Mersin, began taking water from its bow shortly after departing from Kyrenia around noon on Sunday, August 30, and sank while trying to return to Kyrenia Port.
Following the sinking of the ship, the TRNC announced that the bodies of 12 people had been reached and that search efforts continued for 16 missing people.
It is reported that the wreckage of the sunken ship was found at a depth of 554 meters off the coast of Kyrenia.
