Actor Ozan Güven, who received a prison sentence in the domestic violence case against his ex-girlfriend Deniz Bulutsuz, faced a protest at a venue he visited in Kadıköy. Following the incident, Güven broke his silence and issued a written statement.
PROTESTED AT THE VENUE
Actor Ozan Güven went to a venue in Kadıköy the previous evening together with actor Mehmet Aslantuğ. Some women who saw Güven at the venue reacted to the actor by chanting slogans such as "Perpetrators out."
While a brief tension occurred at the venue, it was learned that Ozan Güven later left the establishment.
THE INCIDENT SPARKED DEBATE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
The events quickly resonated widely. Some users supported the protest, while others argued that targeting an individual collectively was not right.
"CRITICISM IS ONE THING, LYNCHING IS ANOTHER"
Following the images that became a topic of discussion, Ozan Güven issued a written statement. The actor, stating that he has never taken criticism about him lightly, said the incident was very severe for him.
In his statement, Güven used the words, "Targeting, humiliating, judging, and trying to remove a person from a public space is, in every way, a transgression of boundaries and limits."
The actor, who claimed he has been brought up with similar accusations for years, said, "I remained silent out of respect for the legal process, but most of the time, I am made a target with the same engineered expressions, the same memorized sentences, and the same prejudices."
"I AM ALSO A HUMAN BEING"
Evaluating the reactions directed at him, Güven expressed his hurt with the words, "I don't expect anyone to love or support me without question. I only say this: Criticism is one thing, lynching is another. Reaction is one thing, ignoring a person is another. I am also a human being."
"THIS SITUATION IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE FOR ME"
The actor stated that the most hurtful aspect of the incident at the venue was the loss of common sense and human decency. He said, "What hurt me the most at that venue was that common sense, distance, and human measure were lost within that reaction, and it was attempted to be provoked."
Güven continued his statement with the words, "I say these words not out of anger, but as a call for common sense. This situation is no longer acceptable for me."
WHAT HAPPENED?
Deniz Bulutsuz had filed a complaint on June 13, 2020, claiming she was assaulted by Ozan Güven. After a trial lasting approximately 5 years, the court sentenced Ozan Güven to 2 years and 3 months in prison for the crime of "intentional injury."
After the parties appealed the decision, the case was taken to the court of appeals. The sentence was finalized when the 20th Criminal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Appeals rejected the appeals. It was learned that Güven would serve the 45-day portion of his sentence, excluding probation, in an open prison.
