According to allegations, a 12-year-old child in Arnavutköy, Istanbul was subjected to peer bullying. Third-degree burns were detected on the child, whose back was doused with cologne and set on fire by other children.
The incident occurred in the evening hours of Friday, September 18, in Arnavutköy Anadolu Neighborhood. According to allegations, 12-year-old B.A. had cologne poured on their back and was set on fire by other children on the street. Upon a report, the 12-year-old child, who had burns on their back, was taken to the hospital. Upon being notified, B.A.'s parents, who learned of the situation, and the father of one of the children alleged to have burned the child went to the hospital.
WHEN THE PAINS INCREASED, THE CHILD WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AGAIN
The family learned at the hospital that the child had third-degree burns. The child, who was treated at the hospital, was discharged after about 25 days. Then, after the child's pains increased again and the child was taken to the hospital, it was revealed that the child had lost consciousness. The family notified the police teams about the incident and filed a complaint.
“THE T-SHIRT STUCK TO THEIR BACK BECAUSE IT WAS NYLON”
Father Kadir Arslan, speaking about the incident, said the following: “The incident happened on September 18. I came home from work in the evening hours of Friday. My children went outside in front of the door. They took my child three streets away. There, one person held my child and another poured cologne on their back. The first time it did not catch fire, the second time it ignited. They poured a little more cologne. The child's back was completely ablaze. The child leaned against a car to put themselves out. Because the T-shirt was nylon, it stuck to their back. Those who burned [my child] brought the child home in a rush. 'They said he fell from the slide.' They are also children. One is 12, the other is 13 years old. They put another long T-shirt on the child. It did not look like a fall from a slide. When I asked my child, when they said, 'He burned me with cologne,' the children immediately ran away.”
“LOST CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE HOSPITAL”
I called the child's father. He tried to beat his own son, but we did not allow it. We came to the hospital in his car. We entered the emergency room. They immediately intervened in the burn unit. The child has a third-degree burn. We stayed in the hospital for about 25 days. Then, after we were discharged, the child did not stay put at home and we came to the hospital again. The child lost consciousness in the hospital.
“I AM SEEKING JUSTICE FOR MY CHILD”
After that, we also notified the security forces. The police took action. They took the children together with their families. They handcuffed one of them. The other was released because they were underage, I am filing a complaint. I will continue to the end. This is peer bullying. I hope justice will be served. I am seeking justice for my child. I also called the Ministry of Justice's office twice. I am waiting for a response from there as well. I hope our Minister of Justice will also help us. Let everyone serve their sentence. We filed a complaint. After the police teams took the child's statement, they took the statements of the other children. One is under house arrest with an ankle cuff as a precaution, and the other is free"
