Peru has made a striking diplomatic decision regarding Iran. Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that diplomatic relations with the Tehran administration have been severed.
In the statement from the ministry, it was alleged that Iran has made it difficult to conduct international inspections aimed at preventing it from producing nuclear weapons.
EMPHASIS ON IAEA INSPECTORS
The statement claimed that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors' access to nuclear facilities in Iran has been blocked on numerous occasions, and the agency's work has been disrupted.
The Peruvian government strongly criticized the situation, emphasizing that international inspections regarding Iran's nuclear activities must be carried out fully.
STRAIT OF HORMUZ ALSO AMONG THE REASONS
Developments in the Strait of Hormuz also played a role in Peru's decision. The statement held Iran responsible for disruptions to international trade conducted through the strait.
The Peruvian government stated that the decision to sever diplomatic relations was a requirement of the country's 'historical peaceful stance and its unwavering commitment to respect for international law.'
ACCUSATION AGAINST IRAN OF 'THREATENING STABILITY IN THE MIDDLE EAST'
In the statement from Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iran's policies in the region were also criticized.
The statement included the words: 'The Peruvian government has on various occasions expressed its condemnation and deep concern over the delicate situation that threatens stability in the Middle East and seriously and negatively affects international peace and security.'
The suppression of peaceful protests in Iran, violations of press freedom, discrimination against women and girls, and pressure on political dissidents were also listed among the Peruvian government's criticisms.
CONSULAR RELATIONS WILL CONTINUE
It was announced that the decision to sever diplomatic relations was conveyed to the Iranian Embassy in Ecuador.
The Peruvian government stated that despite the severance of diplomatic relations, consular relations will continue in order to protect the rights of citizens of both countries.
