Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian participated in the Ashura mourning ceremony in Urmia, performing traditional mourning rituals accompanied by Turkish-language elegies. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attended a mourning ceremony at the Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha Mosque in Urmia on the night of Ashura. In images shared by Iranian state media, Pezeshkian was seen participating in the program accompanied by citizens dressed in black mourning attire and Turkish dirges.
Pezeshkian walked with rhythmic steps shoulder to shoulder with other participants and performed the traditional mourning ritual known as "latmiya" or "matam" in Shia tradition by rhythmically beating his chest.
KARBALA MARTYRS COMMEMORATED
Mourning and commemoration programs were held on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, along with 72 of his companions in Karbala in 680 AD.
Ashura, which falls on the 10th day of Muharram according to the Islamic calendar, is considered one of the most important days of mourning for Shia Muslims to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in Karbala. Mourning ceremonies are held in Iran every year with millions of participants.
