With the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, rectors were appointed to 11 universities. With the decision published in the Official Gazette, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Baz was appointed in place of Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış, the Rector of Şırnak University, who had been discussed with allegations of nepotism and "address-delivered" academic staff advertisements. While Alkış had previously denied the allegations about him, it was stated that Court of Accounts auditors had identified conditions contrary to the principles of equality and merit in some staff advertisements at the university.
Appointment decisions bearing President Erdoğan's signature were published in the Official Gazette. Among the decisions covering the rectorships of 11 universities, one of the most notable changes occurred at Şırnak University. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Baz was appointed in place of Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış, who had previously been at the center of criticism due to allegations concerning academic staff announcements and appointments of his relatives.
HE HAD BEEN CONTROVERSIAL AMID NEPOTISM ALLEGATIONS
Şırnak University's former rector, Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Alkış, had drawn public attention with allegations that he allocated academic positions to relatives and close associates. While it was alleged that some academic announcements at the university were prepared according to the qualifications of specific individuals, the claim that Alkış announced on Facebook on August 19 the names to be appointed on August 25 also caused controversy.
It had been stated that Court of Accounts auditors identified conditions in academic staff announcements at Şırnak University that violated the principles of equality and merit and pointed to specific candidates.
IT HAD BEEN ALLEGED THAT HE INTIMIDATED PERSONNEL
The allegations raised about Alkış were not limited to academic appointments. Some academics claimed that in September Alkış made posts suggesting he would be reappointed as rector and intimidated personnel. The allegation that university employees were threatened to obey him was also among the issues discussed.
HE HAD DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
Denying the nepotism allegations against him, Alkış argued that existing university staff should be given priority in academic staff announcements. In an earlier statement, Alkış said:
"At all universities, 'internal positions' are generally accepted by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) as a matter of convention. As Şırnak University, like all universities in our country, we prioritize our staff somewhat more. In academic announcements, we write conditions suited to them so that their social security is ensured."

With the latest appointment decision published in the Official Gazette, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Baz was appointed as the rector of Şırnak University. Thus, the rectorate term of Alkış, who had previously been discussed over allegations regarding staff announcements and appointment processes at the university, came to an end.
