During the protests that spilled onto the streets in France, luxury brand stores became targets of looters. Groups entering the shops of world-famous brands such as Louis Vuitton and Hugo Boss broke display windows and took products. In incidents in different cities across the country, many businesses were damaged, while security forces intervened against the protesters.

During protests in France against the high cost of living, some groups targeted stores. In Lyon, shops of world-famous brands such as Louis Vuitton and Hugo Boss were looted, and numerous products were taken from shops whose windows were broken. Similar incidents occurred in Paris, Marseille and Lille.

THEY TARGETED THE STORES OF LUXURY BRANDS

Numerous businesses were looted in the Presqu’île area in central Lyon. Stores of brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, The North Face, Sephora and The Kooples were affected by the incidents. While windows of some shops were broken, products were seen being taken out of the stores. Local media reported that many businesses were damaged, especially on Édouard-Herriot Street and its surroundings.

INCIDENTS SPREAD TO PARIS AND MARSEILLE AS WELL

In the capital, Paris, some stores around Place de la République were entered, and beauty products and mobile phones were looted. In Marseille, various businesses, including the Hermès store, were targeted in the attacks. It was reported that an Apple store was entered in Lille, and some businesses were looted in Nice.

THE REASON FOR THE PROTESTS IS THE HIGH COST OF LIVING

In demonstrations across the country, people reacted to rising fuel, food and energy prices and the decline in purchasing power. The actions, which also merged with students’ protests over education conditions, were joined by trade unions and various segments of society. While most of the demonstrations were peaceful, clashes broke out between police and groups in some cities, and vehicles and public buildings were damaged.

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DETAINED

The French Ministry of the Interior reported that 272 people were detained in incidents across the country on October 17. Security forces intervened against groups in some areas using tear gas and water cannons. Authorities continue their investigations into the violent incidents and damage to businesses during the demonstrations.
