Public transportation in Istanbul was increased by 10 percent. The electronic full ticket was raised from 42 liras to 46.20 liras, the "Blue Card" monthly subscription fee from 3,298 liras to 3,628 liras, and the fee for school shuttle distances between 0 and 1 kilometer from 4,051 liras to 4,456 liras.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Assembly, in its July session, made a critical decision affecting millions of Istanbulites. The proposal for a 10% increase in public transportation fares, including buses, metro, metrobus, minibuses, and ferries, as well as taxi, school, and staff shuttle fees, was approved by a majority vote despite the AK Party group's 'no' votes. The new tariff will take effect from July 20.

    AK PARTY OPPOSED

During the discussion of the agenda item, heated debates occurred between AK Party and CHP assembly members. AK Party Assembly and Tariff Commission member Meryem Karaköse criticized the new price increase just four months after the February hike, stating, 'Making a price hike every four months has become a habit. In provinces like Ankara and Izmir, which you also govern, these fares are set at 35 lira. Diesel prices, inflation, or personnel costs are the same everywhere. Since we object to placing the entire burden on citizens, we express our dissent.'

CHP: ECONOMIC CONDITIONS ARE CONSTANTLY CHANGING

Responding to the criticisms, CHP Assembly and Tariff Commission member Mustafa Karaoğlu stated that it is impossible to agree with these words, highlighting the increases in bridges, highways, diesel, and foreign exchange rates. Karaoğlu argued that due to constantly changing economic conditions, the proposal should be approved as it came from the commission. Following the speeches, the new tariff was voted on and passed by a majority with the CHP group's 'yes' votes against the AK Party group's 'no' votes, thereby becoming official.
