The Istanbul University announced to the public that it has revoked the diploma of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
In the statement made by the university, it was noted that a total of 28 diplomas were revoked. While the decision has caused a significant uproar, İmamoğlu's lawyer Mehmet Pehlivan stated that the decision is not null and void.
PROTEST IN PARLIAMENT
CHP deputies protested the decision to revoke İmamoğlu's diploma by banging on their desks in the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. The deputies also occupied the podium, chanting the slogan, "There is no salvation alone; either we all together or none of us."
MÜSAVAT DERVİŞOĞLU: I INVITE RESPONSIBILITY
İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu reacted to the decision in a statement on his social media account, saying, "The revocation of Mr. İmamoğlu's diploma is an application that goes beyond the elimination of a political rival. It is a bad mark written on our report card of law and democracy filled with weaknesses, a rough blow to our social peace, and an open invitation to be dragged into chaos. I invite those who think they govern Turkey to take responsibility. Do not harm the country," he said.
KEMAL KILIÇDAROĞLU: UNACCEPTABLE
Former CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu stated in his announcement, "You have destroyed justice once again. The diploma, which is a right that has been earned, has been disregarded due to political pressures. This is unacceptable," expressing his reaction to the decision.
DEM PARTY: A DARK STAIN
The statement from the DEM Party came from Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan. In his statement, Bakırhan said, "The attempt to obstruct Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu's candidacy for the presidency and the revocation of his diploma is a decision taken under the shadow of political calculations, not legal ones.
The confiscation of democratic rights under the grip of the judiciary is unacceptable. These attempts to obstruct the will of the people and political competition are a dark stain on democracy. Our call is for an immediate end to such interventions targeting democracy," he stated.
ALİ MAHİR BAŞARIR: THERE IS NO LAW LEFT IN THIS COUNTRY
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır expressed his reaction by saying, "The diploma of our Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and presidential candidate Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu has been revoked by an unlawful decision. The judiciary in this country is staging a coup at the behest of the Palace! There is no law left in this country."
ALİ BABACAN: I HOPE THIS ERRONEOUS DECISION IS REVERSED
DEVA Party Chairman Ali Babacan was also among those who reacted to the decision. Expressing his sadness and anger for his country, Babacan said, "We are experiencing one of the most blatant examples of designing politics with administrative and judicial power. The decision to revoke Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma is a decision taken by disregarding the fundamental principles of administrative law, law, and procedural security.
The fact that yesterday's victims apply similar treatments to others in a much harsher manner when they become powerful is a lesson. I send my best wishes to Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu and hope that this erroneous decision is reversed immediately," he stated.
