Following the attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport, sabotage attempts on energy facilities have been detected across Germany. As police raise the alert level, a large-scale search has been launched for a suspicious man.
Sabotage attempts against energy infrastructure in Germany have put security forces on high alert. It was reported that an attempt was made to cause a short circuit at an energy facility in Dormagen. Police launched a large-scale operation after a letter claiming responsibility for the attacks also targeted another transformer station.
Following an attempted drone attack on Leipzig Airport in Germany, security concerns regarding critical infrastructure have increased. According to reports in the German press, this time electricity grids and transformer stations in various parts of the country have become targets of sabotage attempts.
SABOTAGE ATTEMPT AT ENERGY FACILITY
An attempt to cause a short circuit was detected at an energy facility in the town of Dormagen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
It was stated that a letter claiming responsibility for the act reached the police after the incident. Security forces have begun investigating the contents of the letter and possible connections between other sabotage attempts.
A transformer station in the town of Ganderkesee in northern Germany was also placed under a security cordon due to suspicious circumstances.
NEW ATTACK THREAT EMERGES
As the investigation was expanded, the Weisweiler transformer station near Aachen was also taken under examination. Security authorities announced that the claim letter contained a threat of a new attack on this facility.
Teams searched the area for potential ignition mechanisms and sabotage devices.
The letter was claimed to cite the fight against fossil fuels as the reason for the attacks.
LARGE-SCALE SEARCH FOR SUSPECT
The police are focusing on the possibility that a man living in the city of Gevelsberg may be behind the sabotage. A large-scale search operation has been launched to apprehend the suspect.
4,200 MEGAWATT CAPACITY HAD BEEN TAKEN OFFLINE
Other cases of sabotage against energy infrastructure in Germany were also recorded during the week. Due to vandalism at a transformer station in Bergheim, lignite power plant units with a total capacity of 4,200 megawatts were temporarily removed from the electricity grid.
In the state of Brandenburg, it was reported that one of the critical high-voltage lines was targeted with devices containing conductive materials.
