SHE CARRIED HER SKULL BONE IN HER ABDOMINAL WALL FOR 8 MONTHS
Iraz Yavaş, 52, whose skull bone was partially removed and preserved in her abdominal wall for approximately 8 months due to brain edema after a traffic accident, regained her health with the second operation performed.
Iraz Yavaş, a mother of three living in Dindarlı Neighborhood of Sarıgöl district in Manisa, was referred to the Emergency Service of Alaşehir State Hospital from Sarıgöl State Hospital in a coma after a traffic accident in October 2025. Evaluations revealed a large acute subdural hematoma (brain hemorrhage) in the right hemisphere of the brain, posing a life-threatening risk.
Due to the life-threatening risk, the patient was operated on without delay, and to reduce intracranial pressure caused by developing brain edema, a portion of the skull bone was removed and placed under the skin on the anterior abdominal wall. This method, applied in severe brain traumas, saved the patient's life.
TREATMENT PROCESS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED
After successfully completing the intensive care, ward, and rehabilitation process, a second-stage surgical treatment was planned approximately 8 months later once the patient's overall health condition improved.
In the cranioplasty surgery performed by Alaşehir State Hospital Chief Physician and Neurosurgery Specialist Op. Dr. Ahmet Sancar Topal, the patient's own skull bone preserved in the abdominal area was removed and re-implanted. The bone was fixed with titanium plates and screws, and the operation was successfully completed.
The patient, who experienced no problems during post-operative follow-ups, was discharged and returned to daily life.
"OUR PATIENT REGAINED HER HEALTH"
Op. Dr. Ahmet Sancar Topal, Chief Physician of Alaşehir State Hospital and Neurosurgery Specialist who performed the operation, stated that the patient was brought to the hospital after a traffic accident about eight months ago, saying, "We detected an acute subdural hematoma during the evaluation. Due to the life-threatening condition, we operated urgently. We removed the skull bone and placed it in the abdominal area to reduce pressure on the brain. After the treatment process, eight months later, we re-implanted the bone and fixed it with titanium plates. We completed the surgery successfully. Our patient regained her health. We thank our Provincial Health Directorate and the Ministry of Health for enabling such specialized surgeries to be performed in district state hospitals."
Topal noted that decompressive craniectomy is a life-saving method in severe head traumas, stating that the cranioplasty surgery performed is of great importance both for protecting the brain and increasing the patient's quality of life. He also expressed that successfully performing the operation for the first time at Alaşehir State Hospital was a source of pride.
"GOD SPARED ME FOR MY CHILDREN"
Iraz Yavaş, who regained her health after the treatment process, said, "After the traffic accident, I fell into a coma. They placed my skull bone in my abdominal area. Eight months later, they re-implanted it on my head. I regained my health. I thank Doctor Ahmet Sancar Topal and all healthcare workers. May God be pleased with them. God spared me for my children."
The patient's husband, Hasan Yavaş, stated that they learned the surgery was performed for the first time at Alaşehir State Hospital, saying, "We did not have to go to big cities. We thank our doctors and all healthcare workers."

The cranioplasty surgery performed for the first time at Alaşehir State Hospital was also welcomed with satisfaction by the local community. Retired teacher Adil Nergiz said, "The performance of such an important brain surgery in our district made us happy.
