A lawsuit has been filed against Ipek Akinci, who was arrested for allegedly insulting a woman wearing a headscarf during an argument over sun loungers on a beach in Seferihisar, seeking a prison sentence of up to 3 years for the crime of hate and discrimination.
A lawsuit has been filed against İpek Akıncı, who was arrested after an argument over sun loungers on a beach in the Seferihisar district of İzmir, seeking up to 3 years in prison on charges of 'preventing a person from benefiting from a service offered to the public due to hatred based on religious or sectarian differences.'
DETAINED AND RELEASED, ARRESTED AFTER OBJECTION
The incident occurred at a beach in the Mersinalanı neighborhood on July 3rd at around 18:00. An argument allegedly broke out between İpek Akıncı and A.A. and S.G. over a 'sun lounger.' A.A. filed a complaint, claiming that Akıncı insulted her during the argument. Within the scope of the investigation initiated by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, İpek Akıncı was taken into custody on charges of hate and discrimination. After the procedures at the police station were completed, Akıncı was referred to the courthouse and, following her statement to the prosecutor, was brought to the Seferihisar Criminal Court of Peace with a request for arrest, but was released under judicial control.
The Seferihisar Chief Public Prosecutor's Office objected to this decision. Following the objection, Akıncı was taken into custody again and this time was arrested.
INDICTMENT PREPARED
After the investigation was completed, an indictment was prepared against Akıncı. The indictment stated that Akıncı approached the victims A.A. and S.G. and asked, 'Did we pay for this place?' and the victims replied, 'No.'
TARGETED HER HEADSCARF
It was noted that Akıncı then used insulting language, and as the incident continued, she made gestures with her hand towards S.G., who was wearing a headscarf, and said, 'Get lost, go on, yallah, yallah, go.'
The indictment also stated that Akıncı pushed the chair S.G. was sitting on at the beach, causing her to fall, and said, 'Who do you think you are, this place is ours.'
UP TO 3 YEARS IN PRISON REQUESTED
In light of the statements taken and the testimonies collected, a lawsuit was filed against Akıncı seeking up to 3 years in prison on charges of 'preventing a person from benefiting from a service offered to the public due to hatred based on religious or sectarian differences.' An additional decision was made not to prosecute Akıncı on charges of 'insult.'
