Amazon plans to transfer 75% of its operations to robots by 2033. The company, which will replace 600,000 employees with robots, anticipates the closure of 160,000 positions by 2027.
According to documents obtained by the New York Times, Amazon aims to conduct 75% of its operations through robots by 2033. As part of this plan, it is projected that 160,000 positions will be eliminated by 2027.
SAVINGS OF 30 CENTS PER PRODUCT
According to the forecasts in the documents, the automation plan is expected to provide Amazon with a cost advantage of $12.6 billion between 2025 and 2027. This translates to an average savings of 30 cents per product shipment.
Amazon currently uses more than 1 million robots worldwide. The company is also conducting field tests on its bipedal humanoid robot model "Digit."
COMPANY'S "IMAGE" STRATEGY
The report revealed that Amazon's management is discussing adopting a softer language in word choices to reduce public backlash. It is stated that the company plans to use terms like "advanced technology" and "cobot" (collaborative robot) instead of "automation" or "artificial intelligence."
AMAZON'S RESPONSE: DOCUMENTS PRESENT AN INCOMPLETE PICTURE
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the leaked documents "only reflect the perspective of one team," arguing that they do not represent the company's overall hiring strategy. Nantel said, "Documents always present an incomplete picture," and announced that active hiring is ongoing across the U.S., with 250,000 seasonal positions expected to open by the end of the year.

Nobel Prize-winning economist Daron Acemoğlu warned that if the plan is implemented, "Amazon, one of the largest employers in the U.S., could no longer be a net job creator but rather become a job destroyer."
