While the temperature in Istanbul dropped to 8 degrees today, it fell to 5 degrees at night. Meteorological Engineer Adil Tek said that temperatures will gradually rise starting tomorrow and reach 21 degrees over the weekend. Tek stated that the nearest possibility of snow for the city appears at the end of December, but this is not a definite date, and expressed that they do not expect a very harsh winter.

Air temperatures in Istanbul dropped to 8 degrees today. Meteorological Engineer Adil Tek, noting that one of the coldest days of the year was experienced in the city, said, “Temperatures in Istanbul reached their lowest values today. Temperatures currently ranging between 8 and 11 degrees dropped to 5-6 degrees during the night hours. However, starting tomorrow, temperatures will begin to rise gradually. Temperatures will start to increase during November. In the first weeks of December, we expect temperatures to remain above seasonal norms. The nearest possibility of snowfall for Istanbul appears at the end of December.”

In Istanbul today, with temperatures dropping to 8 degrees, one of the coldest days of the year was experienced. Experts state that especially since last Wednesday, the cool air current coming from the north across the country has been effective. Despite the cold weather, citizens walking around the Üsküdar coast stated that the weather was normal. Meteorological Engineer Adil Tek, noting that temperatures in Istanbul had dropped since last Wednesday, said, “Since last Wednesday, decreases in temperatures have been experienced in Istanbul and across the country. The cool and cold air coming from the north has begun to be effective. Temperatures in Istanbul reached their lowest values today. Temperatures currently ranging between 8 and 11 degrees dropped to 5-6 degrees during the night hours. These values are about 5-6 degrees below seasonal norms for Istanbul. The poyraz blowing from the north also increases the feeling of chill. However, starting tomorrow, temperatures will begin to rise gradually.”

TEMPERATURES WILL RISE TO 21 DEGREES AT THE WEEKEND

Tek, making assessments regarding the formation of the cold air, said, “The eastern side of the high-pressure area over Europe is bringing the polar air from the north down over the Black Sea to Istanbul, the Marmara region, and a large part of the country. Since last Wednesday, cool and cold air has been effective under the influence of this system. Today, one of the coldest days was experienced in Istanbul and across the country. Last night in Istanbul, temperatures dropped to 5 degrees. During the day, the highest temperature was measured at around 8 to 11 degrees. Istanbul's coldest day was today. Starting tomorrow, temperatures will rise to 14 degrees, and on Wednesday to 15 degrees. Toward the weekend, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, they will rise to as high as 21 degrees.”

THE NEAREST SNOW POSSIBILITY IS AT THE END OF DECEMBER

Tek, stating that precipitation will also be effective in Istanbul in the coming days, used the following expressions: “Toward the evening hours today, precipitation will lose its effect in Istanbul. No precipitation is expected during the day on Monday, but a new rainy system coming from the Central Mediterranean will be effective in the evening and night hours. The precipitation that will begin on Sunday evening will continue until Tuesday morning. This system originating from the Central Mediterranean will also increase temperatures. On Wednesday and Thursday, intermittent precipitation passages, not strong, will be seen in Istanbul. Temperatures will begin to increase during November. In the first weeks of December, we expect temperatures to remain above seasonal norms. The nearest probability of snowfall for Istanbul appears at the end of December. However, this is not a definite date. In December, along with precipitation, temperatures dropping 1-2 degrees below seasonal norms point to an intrusion of cold air and therefore a possibility of snow. As the days approach, the picture will become clearer.”

A VERY HARSH WINTER IS NOT EXPECTED

Tek, who also made assessments regarding the winter season, said, “This year's winter is expected to show a picture similar to last year's. We estimate that temperatures in January, February, and March will be above seasonal norms, and that the number of warm days will be more than cold days. There will be precipitation, but because there will be more warm days, the probability of snowfall decreases. Last year, it snowed in Istanbul for about 4 days. One of these snowfalls settled on the ground on the first day of the new year. We expect a similar picture this year. Abundant precipitation positively affects agricultural and farming yields. We estimate that yields will increase similarly this year. Snowfall that can settle on the ground in Istanbul may be seen at most a few times. The high number of warm days significantly reduces the probability of snow. However, a harsh cold air intrusion occurring in between and heavy snowfall settling on the ground are also among the possibilities. We do not expect a very harsh winter in Istanbul and across the country. We forecast that we will have a milder winter with abundant precipitation.”

YOUNG MAN FROM ADANA: I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS COLD

Tunahan Öztürk, who said he came to Istanbul from Adana 7-8 months ago, said, “I have never seen this cold in my life. Coming from a hot place like Adana, it is quite hard to get used to here. My friend and I are having difficulty here; we can hardly even go outside. There is a different kind of cold today. I have never seen snow in Adana. Here, we are both a little scared and curious to see snow.”

Gönül Akkurt, who said they were touring Istanbul, said, “For us, every weather is good, sightseeing weather. We do not sit at home; we go out and tour. We are showing Istanbul and the Bosphorus to our guest from Iran. Now we are going to Anadolu Kavağı. The weather is cold, of course, but we dress accordingly. After all, it is winter weather. In summer we wear summer clothes, in winter we wear winter clothes. The weather may be cold, but let our color tones be warm.” Feride Uzun used the following expressions: “We are not that cold; it is normal for this month. There is nothing to do. We came from Samsun for my niece's wedding. Now we have gone out to tour. If God permits, we will return to our hometown tomorrow.” Kemal Çelik, fishing on the Üsküdar coast, also said, “We have been here for 5 hours. It does not feel very cold to those who are moving; it feels warm. That is why we invite everyone to move.”
