The brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, David Sanchez, appeared before a judge in Badajoz on charges of corruption and influence peddling in hiring. While Sanchez argues that the accusations are time-barred and politically motivated, private plaintiffs are seeking a 3-year prison sentence. The case also involves allegations of political nepotism due to family ties.

David Sanchez, the brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has appeared before a judge on charges of corruption and using his influence to secure employment for himself.

David Sanchez, the brother of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, faced a judge today due to a lawsuit filed against him on charges of corruption and using his influence to secure employment for himself. At the preliminary hearing held today in the city of Badajoz, Sanchez, known for his artistic identity, was joined by 11 other defendants accused of similar claims. During the opening session of the trial, defense attorneys harshly criticized the basis of the investigation and requested the dismissal of the case.

“ALLEGATIONS ARE BASED ON WEAK FOUNDATIONS”

Sanchez’s lawyer, Emilio Cortes, argued that the alleged crimes have exceeded the statute of limitations. According to information in the Spanish press, Cortes stated that the accusations are based on “weak foundations,” describing this as a “fishing expedition” conducted for political purposes based on unfounded media claims. Cortes also claimed that the mass review of his client’s emails constitutes a violation of rights.

Other defense attorneys also raised objections to distance their clients from the accusations. The attorneys further noted that they have no information regarding whether any irregularities occurred in the appointment of Sanchez, who is at the center of the allegations.

The presiding judge, Jose Antonio Patrocinio, indicated that the trial could extend until mid-June. It was stated that this timeline might overlap with the scheduled testimony of former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in a separate corruption investigation, potentially increasing political pressure on the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).

THREE-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE SOUGHT FOR SANCHEZ

While prosecutors and defense attorneys are requesting acquittal, private plaintiffs are seeking a three-year prison sentence for David Sanchez and former PSOE Extremadura regional leader Miguel Angel Gallardo. Spanish sources noted that the case was initiated based on a criminal complaint from the right-leaning Spanish civil society organization Manos Limpias.

The case is based on allegations that Sanchez was unlawfully appointed to a senior managerial position at the Badajoz Provincial Council in 2017. The file examines whether Sanchez’s appointment as coordinator of music activities for local conservatories met legal requirements and whether this decision involved political nepotism due to family ties.

This development comes at a time of increased pressure on Prime Minister Sanchez’s government. Yesterday, Spanish security forces raided the PSOE headquarters in the capital Madrid as part of an investigation into alleged disinformation campaigns targeting anti-corruption judicial authorities. In this context, various documents were requested from party officials.

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST FORMER PRIME MINISTER ZAPATERO AND SANCHEZ’S WIFE

Last week, former Prime Minister Zapatero, known for his closeness to Sanchez, was officially named as a suspect in an investigation concerning a state bailout package of 53 million euros provided to an airline during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is also known that Pedro Sanchez’s wife, Begona Gomez, is facing a separate corruption investigation. Prime Minister Sanchez has assessed that these investigations and the accusations against his brother are politically motivated.
