Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar was attacked by an elderly man who spat on him during a live broadcast on social media.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar was subjected to a spitting attack by an elderly citizen during a live broadcast yesterday morning as he walked with Minister of Transport and Investment David Vitezy at Budapest's Nyugati Train Station. As Magyar and Vitezy were walking, an elderly man shouted, "How dare you come here," and spat in their direction.
"I WISH YOU HEALTH"
Prime Minister Magyar turned to the elderly man and said, "I wish you health," then continued walking. A few seconds later, he told the audience that they were seeing "the remaining faces of Fidesz." Although the assailant stayed in the background during the live broadcast, the sound of spitting and the politicians' reactions were captured on camera.
Later, during a press conference, Magyar addressed the issue, telling his supporters not to lose morale and stating that people who cannot control their anger need "understanding and solace." Magyar expressed that the hatred entrenched in some segments of Hungarian society is the result of what he described as "publicly funded political propaganda" carried out by former Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his government.
WILL NOT PRESS CHARGES
In a subsequent statement on social media, Magyar referred to the attacker as a "Fidesz lama" but announced he would not press charges against the assailant. Magyar also said he felt no anger toward the attacker and wished that next time the assailant would show his hostility "to his face."
While experts described the incident as a "serious security breach," Magyar stated that he would not request personal protection following the event.
