The team of Haberler.com tested the proverb knowledge of citizens in Üsküdar, Istanbul. Citizens were asked to complete proverbs such as 'You reap what you sow', 'Where there's smoke, there's fire', 'Save the hay for when the time comes'. The participants' answers revealed the prevalence and everyday use of these proverbs in society.
During the street interview organized by the Haberler.com team in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, citizens were asked to complete various proverbs by giving them a part of the proverb. The interview, which started with traditional proverbs such as "You reap what you sow", "No smoke without fire", and "Time reveals all", aimed to measure the society's dominance over cultural heritage. During the interview, participants came up with different results while completing these commonly encountered proverbs in daily life. While some citizens correctly completed the proverbs, others had difficulty remembering them.
CITIZENS' KNOWLEDGE OF PROVERBS TESTED
Within the scope of the interview, the place and meaning of proverbs in collective memory were also discussed. The role of proverbs in the transmission of cultural values and social norms was analyzed based on the participants' answers. The demonstration of citizens' awareness of the wisdom and life lessons contained in proverbs once again revealed how strong the transmission of this oral cultural heritage is from generation to generation.
