Funeral ceremonies are ongoing for Iran's former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is reported to have died in Israeli and US attacks. Khamenei's three sons were seen for the first time since the war, while the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not appear in public. Reuters claims Mojtaba was wounded in the attack, sustaining permanent facial scars, while the New York Times reported he did not attend the funeral for security reasons. It has been announced that the funeral program will last one week.
Funeral ceremonies for Iran's former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, are ongoing. In footage broadcast by Iranian state television, Khamenei's sons Mustafa, Meysam, and Masoud Khamenei were seen performing funeral prayers beside the coffins of their father and four family members who lost their lives in the attack.
The footage notably showed Masoud Khamenei wiping away his tears with his keffiyeh. It was reported that the three brothers appeared in public for the first time since the war.
NEW SUPREME LEADER DID NOT ATTEND CEREMONIES
The new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who was reported to have succeeded his father in March, did not attend the funeral ceremonies.
Sources speaking to Reuters claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei was injured in the attack targeting his father and sustained permanent scars on his face.
The New York Times reported that Mojtaba Khamenei could not attend the funeral ceremonies due to security reasons.
CEREMONY FOR 5 FAMILY MEMBERS
Alongside the coffin of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, the coffins of his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and 14-month-old grandson, who were reported to have died in the attack, were also present.
Family members and relatives were seen praying beside the coffins during the ceremonies.
7 MILLION PEOPLE USED THE METRO
According to a statement from the Tehran Metro, approximately 7 million trips were made from Saturday night to Sunday morning due to the dense crowds wanting to attend the funeral ceremonies.
ONE-WEEK FUNERAL PROGRAM PREPARED
The Iranian administration has prepared a one-week funeral program for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. As part of the program, a large march expected to be attended by millions will be held in central Tehran on Monday. On Tuesday, the coffins will be taken to the city of Qom, and on Wednesday, they will be transported by plane to Iraq.
After ceremonies held in Najaf and Karbala, the body of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will be brought back to Iran and buried in the city of Mashhad.
