Adnan Mesalime, who lost relatives in the events that began in Syria's Daraa in 2011, expressed that they are very pleased with the decision regarding the ousted regime officials. Mesalime, emphasizing that he finds the death sentence correct in the case where some former regime officials, including Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, and his cousin Atif Najib, were tried, stated that the trial process was definitely carried out in accordance with legal procedures.
"IT WAS A REAL TRIAL"
Mesalime emphasized that the case was conducted under international oversight and supervision, with human rights organizations and international bodies following the hearings.
Noting that plaintiffs were able to present their demands and defendants were given the opportunity to defend themselves and present witnesses, Mesalime said, "This was not like the trials conducted in courts during the ousted regime period; it was a real trial."
"THE REAL BIG CELEBRATION IS IN DARAA"
Stating that the decision is a step in the right direction for ensuring transitional justice and delivering victims' rights, Mesalime said, "Those who committed crimes against the Syrian people must be held accountable."
Emphasizing that the people of Daraa endured great oppression for many years, Mesalime said, "The people of Daraa are very happy today. Today is a holiday for us. However, the real big celebration is in Daraa."
THE COURT'S DECISION IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE PEOPLE OF DARAA
Ramzi Abu Nabout, another Syrian who lost relatives in the events that began in Daraa in 2011, said the court's decision against former regime officials is an important step in ensuring transitional justice. Abu Nabout noted that legal trial procedures were fulfilled during the court process.
Stating that the people of Daraa were subjected to oppression for many years and many families were displaced, Abu Nabout expressed that the court's decision is very important for all Syrians, especially the people of Daraa.
Abu Nabout expressed his hope that the decision would send a message to all Syrians that justice will be achieved and that it would be the beginning of the process of delivering victims' rights.
