Sümeyra Teymur, the CEO of Haberler.com, stated that the internet has changed news consumption habits and that especially young people prefer social media. She emphasized that YouTube journalism provides freedom for journalists, but it is open to manipulation due to the lack of fact-checking. She expressed the need to maintain reliability in digital media.
According to the latest research conducted by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, internet adaptation in Turkey has reached 86%, and citizens spend more than 2.5 hours a day on social networks. This situation reveals that the internet is used not only for entertainment purposes but also as a means of obtaining news. Especially young people follow the news through social media instead of traditional media.
Sumeyra Teymur, CEO of Haberler.com, made significant statements about how social media has changed news consumption habits.
YOUTUBE JOURNALISM HAS BECOME A NEW FORMAT
Teymur stated that a new format called "Youtube Journalism," which has been increasingly popular in recent years, has emerged. This trend, which started with journalists like Cüneyt Özdemir, continues today with many famous journalists and commentators evaluating the agenda through live broadcasts on Youtube.
"These programs are sometimes conducted with guests and sometimes without. Journalists and commentators evaluate the developments of the day live on their Youtube channels, bringing them together with their viewers," she said.
YOUTUBE JOURNALISM PROVIDES FREEDOM TO JOURNALISTS
Teymur emphasized that Youtube journalism offers journalists more freedom compared to traditional media. "There is no media owner here telling journalists what they should or shouldn't say," she stated.
However, Teymur pointed out that this freedom also carries significant risks, noting that every news item produced by traditional media organizations goes through a fact-checking process, while there is no such mechanism in Youtube journalism.
A FIELD OPEN TO MANIPULATION AND FALSE REPORTING
Teymur highlighted that the biggest danger of Youtube journalism is its openness to manipulation and false reporting, using the following expressions:
"In institutional media organizations, the accuracy of news is controlled by editors and various oversight mechanisms. However, there is no such accuracy control mechanism for news provided through Youtube. Therefore, the risk of misinformation spreading is much higher."
ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY SHOULD BE A PRIORITY IN DIGITAL MEDIA
Teymur noted that Youtube journalism is rapidly rising and that providing news through social media is becoming increasingly popular, which also brings the risk of disinformation.
These statements bring an important discussion about the future of digital media to the forefront, once again highlighting the need to uphold the principles of accuracy and reliability in journalism.
