New Syrian pound banknotes, which have been issued by removing two zeros from the currency, have entered circulation in Syria. Now, 100 Syrian pounds will be considered as 1 new Syrian pound.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdulkadir Husri, announced that new banknotes printed with two zeros removed have entered circulation.
Husri held a press conference at the Central Bank building in the capital, Damascus. He stated that the entry of the new banknotes into circulation is not merely a formal step, but a fundamental phase of a comprehensive strategy aimed at reinforcing trust in national institutions and achieving sustainable economic stability.
BANKNOTES WILL BE USED TOGETHER FOR 90 DAYS
Husri said, "As part of the change, 100 Syrian pounds will be accepted as 1 new Syrian pound after the removal of two zeros. The old and new banknotes will be in circulation together for 90 days. If deemed necessary, the period may be extended. The exchange process will be carried out free of charge; no commission, fee, or tax will be collected."
Noting that from next year all bank accounts will be maintained in the new Syrian pound, Husri emphasized that both the public and private sectors are required to comply with this transformation, and that official bulletins for exchange rates will be published in both currencies.
