It has been reported that 10 people were executed by firing squad in eastern Libya on charges of "terror crimes." While military authorities loyal to Haftar claim the executions were carried out in accordance with court rulings, sources in the west and some human rights advocates have questioned the legal nature of the cases and the conditions for a fair trial.
It has been reported that 10 people were executed by firing squad in eastern Libya. According to a statement by military authorities loyal to Khalifa Haftar, the executions were carried out following court rulings issued within the scope of "terror crimes."
STATEMENT FROM AUTHORITY LOYAL TO HAFTAR
According to the news from El-Mesar television, which is close to the administration in eastern Libya, the General Command Military Prosecution Office affiliated with Haftar's forces announced that 10 people had been executed.
The statement said that these individuals were found guilty of "terror crimes" by the High Military Court, and the death sentences were carried out by firing squad.
The military prosecution claimed that the cases were concluded after years of trials and that the defense and other legal processes had been completed. According to the allegations, the charges included membership in banned organizations and involvement in attacks against military personnel and civilians.
LEGAL BASIS OF EXECUTIONS QUESTIONED
Meanwhile, media outlets in western Libya and some local sources have questioned the legal basis of the executions. Some sources have raised allegations that the trials lacked guarantees of a fair trial. The identities of those executed and all records related to the cases have not been shared with the public. These claims have not been independently verified.
Criticism of military courts trying civilians in Libya and of closed-door trials has also been reflected in previous reports by human rights organizations.
