The Ministry of Trade's Advertising Board imposed an administrative sanction on a carpet store in Kadıköy, Istanbul, whose shop window had displayed a "We Are Closing. At a Loss" advertisement for more than a year. The Board considered the business's creating the impression that it would terminate its operations in a manner contrary to the truth as an unfair commercial practice and decided that the advertisement be removed.

The Advertising Board continues its inspections of practices that lead consumers to shop with the perception of discounts and bargains. The Ministry did not disclose the amount of the fine.

IT HAD BEEN IN THE SHOP WINDOW FOR A YEAR

In a statement from the Ministry of Trade, it was reported that a carpet store operating in Kadıköy had been found to have a “We are closing. At a loss” notice in its shop window for more than a year.

“UNFAIR COMMERCIAL PRACTICE” DECISION

The Advertising Board assessed the business’s creating the impression, contrary to reality, that it would terminate its commercial activity as an unfair commercial practice affecting consumers’ economic behavior.

As a result of the review, it was decided that the business had acted in violation of Article 62 of the Consumer Protection Law No. 6502, pursuant to Articles 28/1, 28/2, 28/4 and 29/1 of the Regulation on Commercial Advertising and Unfair Commercial Practices. An administrative sanction was imposed on the business, and it was also ordered that the advertisement be removed.

“WE CONTINUE OUR FIGHT WITH DETERMINATION”

The Ministry’s statement included the following: “As the Ministry of Trade, we continue our fight with determination against consumers being led to shop with the perception of misleading discounts and campaigns.”
