The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has established a tracking system that will ensure the monitoring of anchovy fishing from the sea to the market. This step will enable anchovy fishing to be conducted in a more organized and controlled manner.
Turgay Türkyılmaz, the General Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, provided information about developments in the fishing sector. Türkyılmaz stated that they consulted with sector representatives while making regulations in this area, and he mentioned that with the new regulation they have created a production planning for both fishing and aquaculture.
"ANNUAL CATCHABLE ANCHOVY QUANTITY IS 400 THOUSAND TONS"
Türkyılmaz recalled that approximately 275 thousand tons of anchovy fishing was conducted last year, stating, "This corresponds to 63% of the total catch. We need to make this sustainable. Therefore, we included anchovy in the production planning." He pointed out that while determining the fish species within the scope of production planning, sustainability and the country's competitiveness were also taken into account, and he explained that the regulation would be reviewed annually for necessary updates. Türkyılmaz emphasized that anchovy is at the center of the production planning implementation, stating, "Under the quota application, the annual catchable anchovy quantity has been set at 400 thousand tons. This entire amount has been allocated to the vessels that can conduct this fishing. We have allocated the amount they can catch to each vessel. The vessels know their allocated quota and will be able to fish up to that amount. In this context, the anchovy quota for a 12-meter vessel has been set at 260 tons annually. For larger vessels, this amount can go up to 2 thousand tons."
"QUOTA MONITORING WILL BE CONDUCTED"
Türkyılmaz drew attention to the fact that a vessel applying for anchovy fishing this year will not lose this right for the next year, emphasizing that fishermen do not need to worry about this issue. He stated that fishermen would not face any problems if they do not reach the determined quota amounts. Türkyılmaz reported that they are conducting inspections to control the quota amount set for anchovy, continuing his remarks: "We have determined landing points in every region of Turkey for anchovy fishing; those who wish will not be able to land from just anywhere, and our teams will operate in those areas. The vessel will log how many tons it has fished that day through the tracking system. This information will be sent to our colleagues at the shelters. As soon as the vessel lands, our colleagues will issue a transport document regarding how much the vessel has caught. They will go to the sales points with the transport document. Thus, we have established a system that ensures the traceability of anchovy from fishing to sale."
"CITIZENS ARE SATISFIED WITH BONITO"
Türkyılmaz indicated that bonito fishing is going well this season, stating, "We expect anchovy fishing to increase after October 15. Currently, the number of vessels engaged in anchovy fishing due to bonito fishing is very low. I kindly ask our fishermen to comply with the rules set. Fishermen who do not comply with the rules may be banned from fishing for a month. If it continues, the penalty may double. There are very serious sanctions." Türkyılmaz reported that over 15 thousand tons of bonito fishing has been conducted since September 1, while the corresponding amount during the same period last year was around 3 thousand tons. He noted that this season, citizens are satisfied with bonito, stating, "Bonito is a migratory fish. We have had a lot of fishing during the time we fished in our territorial waters. Now it is migrating towards other regions of the Black Sea, and we expect it to complete its return in our waters."
