The Greek newspaper Kathimerini commented that the approval last week by Libya's House of Representatives of the 2019 memorandum of understanding between Turkey and Libya on the determination of maritime jurisdiction areas, and its description as a "failure" also by ruling party lawmakers, has disturbed the government. The report was headlined "A defeat that cannot be swallowed."
Kathimerini wrote that the government was disturbed by the fact that the memorandum approved by the Libyan House of Representatives on October 20 was regarded as a "failure" by ruling party MPs. The newspaper argued that Keridis's phrase "political defeat" disturbed the Prime Minister's Office much more than Kalogeropoulos's remark.
"WE SWALLOWED THE PILL"
In its news article titled "An Unswallowable Defeat," Kathimerini recalled the statement made last week by Dimitris Kalogeropoulos, an MP from the ruling New Democracy Party, regarding Libya's approval, in which he said "we swallowed the pill," and the statements by New Democracy MP Dimitris Keridis describing it as a "political defeat."
The newspaper argued that Keridis's statement, as he is also a professor of international relations, disturbed the Prime Minister's Office more than Kalogeropoulos's statement.
"THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE WOULD HAVE WANTED HIM TO BE MORE CAREFUL"
The report included the statement: "It was not only that Keridis has an academic perspective, but also that he is the parliamentary spokesman of the New Democracy Party that caused this discomfort. The Prime Minister's Office would have wanted Keridis to be more careful in his statements."
The Libyan House of Representatives approved on October 20 the memorandum of understanding signed between Libya and Turkey in 2019 on the determination of maritime jurisdiction areas, and this decision caused a great reaction in Athens.
The Greek opposition had assessed this development as a failure of the Greek government in foreign policy.
