SUSPICIOUS $2.53 BILLION TRANSFER ON BINANCE
High-value transactions reported to have occurred on October 29 in the hot wallets of cryptocurrency exchange Binance drew attention. According to claims based on blockchain data, transfers worth approximately $2.53 billion covering more than 60 crypto assets were carried out. The size of the transactions and the movement of funds between some wallets raised the possibility of a possible cyberattack.
STATEMENT FROM BINANCE: USER FUNDS ARE SAFE
Following the allegations, Binance announced that it was examining reports concerning a potential security issue. The company's statement included the following statements: “Our teams are aware of reports of a potential security issue and are actively investigating. User funds are completely safe. Our security teams are urgently reviewing all relevant information, and we will provide updates through official Binance channels as soon as we have verified information. Users should be cautious against fraud and should not trust unofficial links, messages, or requests for account information.” While Binance emphasized in its statement that user assets are safe, it has not yet made a definitive assessment regarding the outcome of the investigation.
167,464 ETH TRANSFERRED TO THE SAME ADDRESS
According to blockchain data, 167,464 ETH worth approximately $388 million was transferred from the wallet labeled Binance 14. From another wallet labeled Binance 16, 28,005 ETH was sent to the same recipient address. These transactions constituted notable parts of the large-scale asset movements reported to have occurred on October 29.
THE TORNADO CASH DETAIL DREW ATTENTION
One of the most striking details of the allegations was the information that the wallet initiating the transfer was funded through Tornado Cash. Tornado Cash is known as a privacy protocol that can make cryptocurrency transactions difficult to trace. It was alleged that some of the assets sent to the recipient address were moved to another wallet within a short time. It was reported that approximately $1.5 billion in crypto assets remained at the recipient address.
