After Ukraine's UAV attack on Yandex's data center in Russia, the disabling of systems also affected taxi drivers using Yandex Go in Istanbul. İsmet Dalcı, Chairman of the Istanbul Taxi Drivers' Tradesmen Chamber, announced that taxi drivers working through the app have not been able to receive their payments for 2-3 days. Meanwhile, preparations have begun for the transition to a new-generation taximeter system in taxis.
OPERATIONS HALTED AT YANDEX'S DATA CENTER
An unmanned aerial vehicle attack was carried out by Ukraine on the data center of the Russian technology company Yandex located in the Vladimir region. It was reported that operations at the facility came to a complete halt after the attack.
In a statement from the company, it was stated that emergency teams and technical experts continue their work in the region. Due to the disruption experienced, customers were advised to use alternative systems, while a warning was issued that there may also be interruptions in technical support services. The problem occurring at the data center in Russia also affected taxi drivers providing services through the Yandex Go application in Turkey.
TAXI DRIVERS IN ISTANBUL HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RECEIVE PAYMENTS FOR 3 DAYS
İsmet Dalcı, Chairman of the Istanbul Taxi Drivers' Tradesmen Chamber (İTEO), made a statement regarding the payment problem experienced by taxi drivers using Yandex Go. Stating that system records could not be accessed due to the disruption at the data center, Dalcı said that taxi drivers have not been able to collect their earnings for 2-3 days. Dalcı said, “With Ukraine's attack on Yandex's data center in Russia, taxi drivers cannot receive payments. For 2-3 days, taxi drivers providing services with Yandex Go have been having difficulty collecting their fees. Payments cannot be made due to the problem at Yandex's data center, and Yandex does not know how much payment it will make. There is a serious reaction from taxi drivers because the data cannot be accessed.”
CALL TO TAXI DRIVERS: “DO NOT USE YANDEX GO”
After the payment crisis experienced, Dalcı, who also voiced his criticisms of the Yandex Go application, called on taxi drivers not to use the application.
Arguing that Yandex Go presents vehicles with D2 tourism licenses as taxis, Dalcı stated that they do not support this application.
A NEW ERA BEGINS IN TAXIS
In addition to the payment problem experienced by taxi drivers in Istanbul, preparations continue for a new technological transformation in the sector. Within the scope of the new tax regulation, there will be a transition to a new-generation taximeter system that will work integrated with the Taxi Fiscal Device (TMC) in taxis. The new system will include features such as Turkish and English voice announcements, remote vehicle tracking, mileage control, and remote adjustment. The taximeters will audibly announce the opening fee at the start of the trip and the total amount at the end of the trip.
TAXI DRIVERS GIVEN TIME UNTIL NOVEMBER 16
Within the scope of the new regulation, the TMC devices that have been made mandatory must be installed in taxis by November 16, 2026. However, the period set for transition to the application is expected to be extended until the end of the year. It was stated that the new devices will be offered to taxi drivers through the Istanbul Taxi Drivers' Tradesmen Chamber.
İTEO Chairman İsmet Dalcı, stating that the new system will provide significant conveniences in the sector, said, “With features such as the audible Turkish and English announcement system, remote vehicle tracking, mileage control, and remote adjustment, our taximeter will initiate an important technological transformation and convenience in Istanbul taxi driving.”
INSTANT TRANSLATION ERA IN TAXIS
In addition to the new taximeter system, there are plans to install tablets in taxis. Thanks to the tablets to be installed in vehicles, passengers will be able to get information about historical sites in Istanbul and nearby restaurants. The system, which is aimed especially at facilitating the transportation of foreign tourists, will be able to perform simultaneous translation between taxi drivers and tourists. Thus, it is aimed to reduce communication problems between passengers who speak different languages and drivers.
