The claim that 'Earth's gravity will disappear for 7 seconds on August 12th,' which spread rapidly on social media, worried millions of people. Due to the increasing shares and curiosity, NASA and physics experts made consecutive statements on the subject, evaluating the scientific aspect of the claims.
In videos shared on many platforms, especially TikTok and Instagram, it was claimed that Earth's gravity would disappear for 7 seconds on August 12, 2026.
After the claims quickly reached large audiences, users began researching answers to questions such as "What will happen on August 12?", "Will gravity really disappear?" and "Will people float into the air?"
CLEAR STATEMENT FROM NASA
Following the increasing claims, the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) made an assessment on the matter.
A NASA official speaking to the fact-checking platform Snopes stated that there is no scientific data indicating that Earth's gravity would disappear even momentarily, and clarified that these claims do not reflect the truth.
"SCIENTIFICALLY IMPOSSIBLE"
Physics experts also emphasized that gravity is not a force that can be turned on and off like pressing a button.
According to experts, since gravity is a fundamental physical interaction arising from the planet's mass, it is impossible for it to disappear even briefly. Additionally, it was stated that even gravitational waves occurring in space cannot create an effect that would noticeably change gravity on Earth.
Scientists state that against such claims circulating on social media, only statements made from reliable and scientific sources should be taken into account.
