Following the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the name of the candidate that the CHP will nominate for the position of Deputy Mayor of Istanbul has become clear. According to information leaked to the corridors of power, it has been stated that the CHP's candidate is Nuri Arslan.

Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested as part of a corruption investigation launched against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. While it remains uncertain who will be the acting president of IMM in place of İmamoğlu, all eyes are on the meeting scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 PM, where the municipal council will elect its vice president.

VICE PRESIDENT TO BE ELECTED IN IMM

In the 314-member IMM council, the CHP has 185 members, the AK Party has 120, the MHP has 6, and the BBP has 2 members, while rumors have started to circulate regarding the CHP's vice presidential candidate. Initially, names such as Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş, Büyükçekmece Mayor Hasan Akgün, and Eyüpsultan Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen were discussed in CHP circles, but as the election approached, a completely different name came to the forefront.

NURI ARSLAN'S NAME IS BEING DISCUSSED IN THE BACKROOMS

Former CHP MP and journalist Barış Yarkadaş stated on his social media account that the CHP's candidate is Nuri Arslan. Yarkadaş mentioned that CHP Deputy Chairman Gökan Zeybek said in a meeting with CHP council members, "Our candidate is Nuri Arslan." Journalist Şaban Sevinç also stated on his social media account, "Nuri Arslan is coming as the 1st Vice President of the IMM Council in place of Ekrem İmamoğlu."

WHO IS NURI ARSLAN?

Nuri Arslan was born in 1969 in Sivas. He completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul and graduated from Yıldız Technical University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Naval Architecture (Marine Machinery) in 1990. He served as General Manager in a private company.

From 1999 to 2004, he served as a Municipal Council Member in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul. Between 2009 and 2017, he was the Deputy Chairman of the Red Crescent Küçükçekmece, and from 2014 to 2018, he held the position of Chairman of the Board of the Beylikdüzü Industrialists and Business People Association (BEYSİAD). He was a Board Member of the Istanbul Federation of Industrialists and Business People (İSİFED) from 2014 to 2021 and served as the Deputy Chairman of the Sivas Koyulhisar and Villages Service Foundation (KODAV) from 2009 to 2020. He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Beylikdüzü City Council from 2011 to 2019.

Arslan, who was elected as a member of the Beylikdüzü Municipality and IMM Council between 2019 and 2024, was re-elected as a member of the Beylikdüzü Municipality and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council in the local elections on March 31, 2024. As of April 15, 2024, he was elected as the 1st Vice President of the Council through a vote held in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council. He is married and has three children.
