In the Kartepe district of Kocaeli, a fire caused by methane gas has been ongoing for approximately 23 hours. The neighborhood muhtar, İbrahim Kır, who spoke about the incident, said, "The area has been closed to traffic, and precautions have been taken."
The interesting incident occurred around 14:00 yesterday on Bedir Street in Dumlupınar Neighborhood during the drilling work for the metro construction. Methane gas that surfaced during the drilling work, which was being conducted at a depth of approximately 47 meters, ignited.
NOBODY IS ALLOWED NEAR THE AREA
After the workers reported to the 112 Emergency Call Center, police, health, fire, and AFAD teams were dispatched to the area. Teams set up barriers and closed off access to the area around the fire, taking security measures.
MAYOR ON SITE
Kartepe Mayor Mustafa Kocaman and Dumlupınar Neighborhood Muhtar İbrahim Kır arrived at the scene to gather information from the teams.
"THERE IS NO DANGEROUS SITUATION"
Regarding the fire, Dumlupınar Neighborhood Muhtar İbrahim Kır made statements. Kır stated that methane gas was released during the ongoing drilling work for ground surveys, saying, "There is no danger for our neighborhood. The burning has been continuing for 23 hours. All institutions have come, looked, and examined. It is not related to natural gas. It has been determined that it is methane gas, and it continues to burn in this way. The area has been closed to traffic, and precautions have been taken."
