The General Assembly of the Constitutional Court rejected the request for the annulment of the Law on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law, which includes regulations concerning stray animals. The CHP had filed a lawsuit at the Constitutional Court seeking the annulment of 16 out of the 17 articles of the law and the suspension of its enforcement.
The Constitutional Court (AYM) General Assembly rejected the request for the annulment and suspension of the enforcement of the Law on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law regarding stray animals.
CHP HAD FILED A LAWSUIT
The CHP had filed a lawsuit at the AYM for the annulment and suspension of enforcement of 16 articles of the Law on Amendments to the Animal Protection Law No. 7527, which consists of 17 articles.
DECIDED BY CONSIDERING THE MERITS
The AYM General Assembly decided on the application by considering the merits. According to the information received, the High Court rejected the request for annulment of the Law.
REJECTED UNANIMOUSLY
It was learned that the High Court unanimously rejected the annulment requests for some articles, while it rejected the annulment requests for other articles by a majority vote.
WHAT DOES THE LAW INCLUDE?
The law regulates the collection of stray animals without distinction between cats and dogs, the keeping of stray or weakened dogs in shelters until they are adopted, and that local authorities will rehabilitate street animals only after taking them to shelters. It also sets out the procedures and principles regarding the killing and euthanasia of animals under certain conditions.
