Istanbul Governor Davut Gül announced that the flood, which killed 7 people in the city last week, caused approximately 10 billion lira in direct and indirect damage. Speaking at the Marmara Basin Water Board Meeting, Gül stated that the pain of those who lost their lives "cannot be measured in money," and said that floods should be a turning point for Marmara like the August 17 earthquake.
The economic toll of the flood that affected Istanbul last week has emerged. Governor Davut Gül announced that the damage caused by the flood is approaching 10 billion.
"DAMAGE OF NEARLY 10 BILLION"
Speaking at the Marmara Basin Water Board Meeting organized under the coordination of the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Gül stated that the flood caused material and moral losses and said:
"Therefore, we have material and moral losses. In this last flood alone, there is direct and indirect damage of approximately nearly 10 billion, and our deceased fellow citizens already have pain that cannot be measured in money. We evaluate that separately."
"RAINFALL THAT CAN BE SEEN ONCE IN 500 YEARS"
Noting that the flood involved an amount of rainfall that can be encountered once in 500 years, Gül reminded that 7 people lost their lives in the flood. Gül said, "The flood did not happen out of nowhere. In fact, as fellow citizens, as citizens, as administrators, everyone living in this city has more or less a fault in this flood happening."
Gül, saying that the buildings destroyed after the flood were unlicensed and earthquake-resistant structures built in the stream bed, emphasized that municipalities and administrators at all levels of the state also had a share in not intervening in these structures in time.
"IT MUST BE A MILESTONE"
Gül used the following statements: "After this stage, just as the August 17 earthquake was a milestone, the floods we experienced last week must be a milestone for Marmara, especially our Istanbul. All the figures changed. All our expectations changed."
