The Supreme Court's 1st Criminal Chamber upheld the 10-year prison sentence given to Ümitcan Uygun for the crime of "causing death as a result of intentional injury" in the case related to the death of Esra Hankulu. THE RELEASE REQUEST WAS ALSO REJECTEDThe Chamber completed the appeal review regarding the decision made by the Ankara 9th Heavy Penal Court on April 13, 2022. Accordingly, it was decided to uphold the 10-year prison sentence given to Uygun for the crime of "causing death as a result of intentional injury" due to Hankulu's death. Additionally, Uygun's request for release was denied. WHAT HAPPENED?According to the indictment of the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, on August 3, 2021, police teams went to a house in the Akdere neighborhood of the Mamak district and determined that 25-year-old Esra Hankulu had lost her life. Following this, Ümitcan Uygun, who was staying in the same house with Hankulu that night, along with Furkan Gürgil and Dilan Civelek, were taken into custody. It was requested that the defendant Uygun be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentionally killing a person who cannot defend themselves," while the defendants Gürgil and Civelek, who were not in custody, faced up to 5 years in prison for "destroying evidence of the crime." The Ankara 9th Heavy Penal Court, which conducted the trial, sentenced the defendant Uygun to 10 years in prison for the crime of "causing death as a result of intentional injury," while it sentenced the defendants Gürgil and Civelek, who were accused of "destroying evidence of the crime," to 1 month and 6 days in prison each, ruling for the postponement of the announcement of the verdict for these defendants. An indictment was also prepared regarding Ümitcan Uygun in connection with the death of Sema Esen, known by the name Aleyna Çakır.
