The moment a 100-year-old woman's lifeless body was carried through the streets in a wheelchair in Brazil was captured on camera.
According to a statement from her son to the Rio de Janeiro Police Department, Aurora Marques passed away at home after a brief illness.
Marques' son stated that his mother had been ill since January 7, after the landlords said they would be evicted from their home in Campinho.
However, on Tuesday, her condition worsened, and shortly after the 100-year-old woman said she was not feeling well, she passed away.
The grieving son called the Mobile Emergency Care Service, and health officials were sent to the scene. Marques' death was recorded by a doctor, who said the body would be taken by the Social Assistance Department.
However, as the Social Assistance teams did not arrive and his mother's body remained at home overnight, the man became impatient. He then decided to take the body himself to a Social Assistance Center.
He placed his mother's lifeless body in the wheelchair and began his sorrowful journey after covering most of the body with a black blanket.
While pushing the wheelchair down the street, it was claimed that local drug dealers stopped him and accused him of killing Marques. One of the neighborhood residents shouted at him, "You must be crazy."
Marques' body was taken from the street and transported to the local morgue. An autopsy result is awaited.
The son, whose name has not been disclosed, was taken to the police station for questioning.
The Mobile Emergency Care Service stated that they had contacted the family to retrieve the body and plan free burial services, but the calls went unanswered.
The Social Assistance Department also announced that they would provide free burial services to the family and were waiting for Marques' son to contact them.
The Police Department announced that an investigation had been launched regarding the elderly woman's death.
