WHO IS NEESKENS?Born in Heemstede, the Dutch coach became a professional football player at the age of 17 with his country's RCH team. After two seasons, Neeskens transferred to Ajax, where he had a career breakthrough, playing 124 matches and scoring 33 goals in four seasons. Being a midfield star of the era opened the door for Neeskens to Barcelona in 1974. He played 140 matches and scored 35 goals with the Spanish team over five seasons, earning the nickname Johan Segon (Second Johan) as a reference to his teammate and fellow countryman Johan Cruyff. In 1979, he moved to New York Cosmos, and after spending five seasons in the USA, he returned to Europe, playing for various clubs until he retired at the age of 40. During his active football career, Neeskens won two league titles with Ajax, three European Cup titles, the UEFA Super Cup won in 1972, and the Intercontinental Championship, as well as the Cup Winners' Cup with Barcelona in 1979. Neeskens, who played 49 times and scored 17 goals for the Netherlands National Team, reached the World Cup final twice.
