Last week, Misty Clanton Roberts, who resigned from the DeRidder City Council, was arrested on charges of engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor. The Louisiana State Police Special Victims Unit arrested Roberts for third-degree sexual abuse. This arrest came as a result of an investigation initiated based on a complaint from the Beauregard County Sheriff's Office.
A police spokesperson stated that the alleged victim and another child confirmed that Roberts had engaged in sexual intercourse with the child. Roberts was released on bail of $75,000 shortly after.
Roberts' attorney made a statement emphasizing that their client is innocent and has not been accused of any crime yet. The attorney requested respect for the presumption of innocence from the public.
This incident occurred after a tumultuous period in DeRidder's local government. Roberts announced a two-week leave on July 26 but unexpectedly resigned the next day. Police interviewed two children, one of whom was the victim, and both stated that Roberts had engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim while she was the mayor.
