The female police officer shot and killed a person who was trying to forcibly take her weapon while she was attempting to break up a fight.

In an incident in Chicago, an off-duty female police officer shot and killed a thief after warning him not to take her weapon.

The incident unfolded on January 17: A plainclothes police officer, attempting to break up a fight among four people, warned 39-year-old Leevon Smith, who was trying to take her gun, saying, "I will kill you." During the struggle between the two, a gun was fired as the couple fell to the ground.

In the footage and audio recordings released by the city's Civilian Office of Police Accountability, it is heard that the officer fired two shots initially, and the injured Smith shouted, "You shot me, you shot me." As the officer fired a third time, she said, "I told you I would kill you." Heavily injured, Smith pleaded, "I'm sorry, I don't want to die."

According to police reports, it was determined that Smith posed a real threat to the officer and was attempting to take her gun. During the struggle, the officer sustained a cut above her eye. Smith, who was taken to the hospital, died two days later.

The officer, who started her duty in June last year, was placed on administrative leave for 30 days after the incident, and no criminal charges were filed against her. However, Smith's family filed a $10 million lawsuit against the city administration and the police officer.

Before his death, Smith had been charged with attempted robbery and aggravated assault.
