A female police officer in England has been sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison for having an illicit relationship with a drug dealer in prison and leaking confidential information.
Choni Kenny, a 27-year-old officer with Greater Manchester Police, was caught on security cameras kissing inmate Josh Whelan in a prison waiting room. The investigation revealed that Kenny had maintained a close relationship with Whelan even while wearing her uniform.
During the trial at Liverpool Crown Court, it was revealed that Kenny had leaked police information to drug dealer Whelan and had provided him with 20 different mobile phones to continue his criminal activities in prison.
It was found that the police officer continued her illicit relationships even after Whelan's release. This time, she established a relationship with 28-year-old Rahim Mottley, a former schoolmate who was wanted by the police. She was found to have provided Mottley, who fled to Spain, with information about planned police raids and conducted searches in police databases.
Judge Neil Flewitt addressed Kenny, saying, "You have not only let down the police and the public, but also yourself, your family, and your friends. You knew what you were doing was wrong."
In the case, 31-year-old Whelan was sentenced to 2 years and 8 months, while Mottley received a sentence of 2 years and 4 months.
The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police stated, "This was not a single mistake, but a series of serious breaches that went on for a long time. Sharing police data with active criminals is behavior unbecoming of the police profession."
