The bodies and remains of approximately 100 Palestinians, who had been under the rubble of buildings destroyed in Israeli attacks in Gaza for over two years, were recovered and handed over to their families. After a memorial ceremony held for the victims, including many children, the bodies were buried. It is estimated that thousands of people are still buried under the rubble in Gaza.
Families who had been waiting for news from their loved ones for years after the destruction left by the war in the Gaza Strip faced a painful farewell.
As a result of efforts carried out in the rubble of houses demolished in Israeli attacks in the Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City, the bodies and remains of approximately 100 Palestinians were recovered.
THEY HAD BEEN UNDER THE RUBBLE FOR OVER TWO YEARS
The victims were reported to have lost their lives in attacks carried out by Israel on residential buildings in the area in 2023. The bodies could not be reached for a long time due to the scale of the rubble, security conditions in the region, and a lack of equipment.
Following efforts intensified by civil defense teams in recent weeks, the rubble was cleared, and the bodies and remains were removed. After identification procedures, the families were notified.
MANY CHILDREN AMONG THE DECEASED
It was reported that 60 of the approximately 100 people buried were children. It was stated that a significant portion of those who lost their lives belonged to the same families, and the bodies and remains of 55 people from the Malaka family alone were recovered.
FAMILIES WERE ABLE TO BID FAREWELL AFTER YEARS
Families who had been unable to reach their loved ones' bodies for years came together at a memorial ceremony held in the Zaytoun neighborhood. Palestinian flags were draped over the bodies, while families lit candles and laid flowers.
In addition to the relatives of the victims, thousands of Palestinians attended the ceremony. After the funeral prayer, the bodies and remains were taken to the cemetery and laid to rest.
THOUSANDS ARE ESTIMATED TO STILL BE UNDER THE RUBBLE
Civil defense officials in Gaza estimate that the bodies of thousands of people are still beneath the collapsed buildings. Teams state that the lack of heavy machinery and search equipment significantly slows down their efforts.
Officials say that if the necessary equipment is provided, the recovery of bodies trapped under the rubble could be accelerated.
