The fire that started in Los Angeles, California, is spreading due to strong winds and is uncontrollable. The fire, which has claimed the lives of 10 people, has not been brought under control for days. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna stated that they requested assistance from the California National Guard for the ongoing fires in the Palisades and Eaton areas.
400 NATIONAL GUARDS DEPLOYED
Luna stated that 400 guards have been assigned to combat the fire affecting the city and have begun their duties in designated areas. Military personnel are working in various fields, from infrastructure and traffic control to different rescue operations. Luna said that the reinforcement of personnel would increase the fighting forces.
MORE THAN 5,000 STRUCTURES UNUSABLE
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone stated that the fire in the Eaton area has spread to approximately 14,000 acres and that the containment rate so far is zero. Marrone confirmed, "We can verify that more than 5,000 structures have been damaged or rendered completely unusable so far."
CURFEW WILL BE IMPOSED
Luna also stated that they will impose a curfew in certain areas around Palisades and Eaton today between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM local time. Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo also mentioned in the meeting that residents under evacuation orders should not return home until they receive information from the authorities. Gordo said, "We are seeing people starting to return to these areas. Our message to them is to stay away from these areas until the evacuation orders are officially lifted." There are still active evacuation orders for approximately 180,000 people in the Los Angeles area, and evacuation warnings for 200,000 people.
POWER LINES HAVE BEEN CUT
US President Joe Biden stated that small fires in more than 50 locations have been suppressed, but three major fires continue in Los Angeles, and due to the wind, the fires are spreading in some areas. The President noted that the fire in the Hollywood Hills area has also been brought under control, but the fires in the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst areas are ongoing, and efforts are continuing. Biden also mentioned that due to the fires, the electricity of power lines has been cut, and water pumps are not working due to lack of power, but authorities have started to deliver electricity to necessary places through generators to resume water pumping.
WHY CAN'T THE FIRE BE EXTINGUISHED?
The wind, which is cited as the biggest factor in the fire's progression, was blowing at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour, causing the fire to jump to other areas. The wind speed has decreased for now, but it is still reported that it can reach 100 kilometers per hour.
