In China, a robot named "Guanghua No 1" presented an impressive show by displaying various facial expressions. The robot was introduced at the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference. ABLE TO EXPRESS HUMAN-LIKE EMOTIONSThe robot developed by Fudan University in Shanghai is approximately 165 cm tall and weighs 62 kg. This humanoid robot has 45 intelligent joints and is equipped with a "hierarchical generative embodied brain model". This allows the robot to move its hands smoothly and walk with an upright posture. It can express four emotions such as happiness, anger, sadness, and joy on its facial screen. DEVELOPED TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF AN AGING POPULATIONThe robot was developed to meet the increasing demands of China's aging population. Gan Zhongxue, Deputy Dean of the Academy of Engineering and Technology at Fudan University, said, "Our market research showed that the most urgent areas for humanoid robot applications are elderly care and healthcare services." He stated that their goal is to create a "health companion" that can provide personalized and empathetic care for the elderly. Guanghua No 1 is one of the 18 humanoid robots exhibited at WAIC and is the only humanoid robot developed by Fudan University. The emotional intelligence of the robot is inspired by the brain's motivation and dopamine reward mechanism, and it uses multi-level coordinated incentive algorithms to produce human-like perceptions and behaviors. WILL ASSIST BEDRIDDEN AND ELDERLY INDIVIDUALSThe robot, which has been under development for the past two years, was designed by a team of experts in mechanical, biological, engineering, computer science, and big data fields. They plan to release a trial version by the end of 2024 and are conducting comprehensive tests in provinces such as Jiangsu and Zhejiang. These tests include tasks such as assisting the elderly in getting out of bed or going to the bathroom.
