The downpour, which intensified in the evening hours in Istanbul, also hit the historic Sadabad Mosque. As a result of the overflowing of the Kağıthane Stream, rising waters flooded into the place of worship. While the interior of the mosque almost turned into a lake, the mihrab and minbar were submerged.
Heavy torrential rain that continues to affect Istanbul caused a stream flood in Kağıthane. Floodwaters that rose after the Kağıthane Stream overflowed inundated the historic Sadabad Mosque, which has survived from the Ottoman period to the present day.
KAĞITHANE STREAM OVERFLOWED, WATER POURED INTO THE MOSQUE
With the heavy rainfall, the waters overflowing from the Kağıthane Stream, whose flow rate rose rapidly, did not only cover the area around the mosque; they seeped through the doors of the historic structure dating from the time of Sultan Ahmed III.
In footage captured by mobile phone cameras, it was seen that the floodwaters completely covered the mosque's interior, and the mihrab and minbar remained under water.
DAMAGE ASSESSMENT EXPECTED AT HISTORIC STRUCTURE
While the high water level in the historic mosque, whose interior almost turned into a lake, draws attention, the extent of the damage caused by the flood to historic carpets and wooden fittings will become clear once the waters recede.
