In the Turnalı area of Kıran Neighborhood, located in the Ula district of Muğla, a forest fire that started at 03:30 on Friday morning is continuing for three days in rugged terrain, right by the Gökova Bay. As the firefighting efforts in the Turnalı region of Gökova Bay enter their third day, the smoke rising from the steep cliffs can only be intervened from the air during the day. The fire, which continues on the cliffs dominating the Gökova Bay, reignites at night due to the effect of the wind.
'MAD MEHMET' FACTOR
The 'Mad Mehmet' wind, commonly used among the local people and fishermen in Gökova Bay, complicates the control of the fire. The 'Mad Mehmet' wind is a name given by the locals and fishermen due to the sudden change in direction and intensity of the wind. According to the stories of the locals and fishermen, a fisherman named Mehmet, who lived in the region in the 1970s, had an argument with his wife on a windy day and set out to sea but never returned. Although his boat was found on the beach days later, Mehmet's body could not be located. Since that day, this wind blowing in the region has been referred to as the 'Mad Mehmet wind' by the locals.
NIGHT OPERATIONS CAPTURED BY DRONE
The struggle of the teams intervening from the land against the flames that occasionally spark on the slopes of Kıran Neighborhood facing the bay was captured by a drone camera throughout the night. In the region, alongside the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and Menteşe Municipality teams, institutions, volunteers, and villagers are working to contain the flames. In the forest fire that started in the Turnalı area of Gökova Bay, 29 structures, including 17 summer houses, were damaged. Firefighting efforts involve 45 fire trucks, 14 water tankers, 7 bulldozers, and 313 forest personnel on the ground, while 16 helicopters and 8 planes participate from the air during the daytime. Gendarmerie and security teams also provide support with helicopters and water cannon vehicles.
