Bayer continues to lose lawsuits filed by those who claim that the glyphosate-containing agricultural herbicide called Roundup is a significant factor in triggering cancer. A jury in a court in Georgia, USA, ruled on Friday that the German company must pay $2.1 billion, including $65 million in compensatory damages, to a plaintiff who claimed that Bayer's Roundup herbicide caused harm, including cancer.

ONE OF THE HIGHEST DAMAGES IN SIMILAR CASES

The jury also found that Bayer did not provide adequate warnings about the potential risks of using Roundup and was responsible for failing to alert plaintiffs about the dangers of the drug. The $2.1 billion amount has been recorded as one of the highest compensations awarded in lawsuits related to the glyphosate-containing agricultural herbicide Roundup in the USA. In a statement, Bayer disagreed with the jury's decision, stating that the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence and the consensus of regulatory agencies and global scientific assessments contradicted the claims about glyphosate. The company will appeal the recent decision in Georgia, as it has in all other cases. The German company also noted that the compensations in cases that reached final decisions were generally reduced by about 90% compared to the original jury decisions. Following this ruling, Bayer's shares lost more than 6% of their value on the stock market today.

CONDEMNED TO BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGES

After acquiring the American agricultural company Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018, Bayer was condemned to pay billions of dollars in fines and compensations in lawsuits filed by those who claimed that the glyphosate-containing agricultural herbicide Roundup is a significant factor in triggering cancer. While Bayer denies the claims about glyphosate, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a carcinogen in 2015. In 2020, Bayer announced that it had reached a settlement in lawsuits filed against it in the USA, agreeing to pay $10.9 billion to plaintiffs. Despite the settlement, the company is facing over 60,000 lawsuits related to Roundup. The German company has set aside $5.9 billion as a legal reserve for these lawsuits.
