Semiha Deniz (33), who was shot and killed by her estranged husband in front of her daughter's school in the Fatih district of Istanbul, was laid to rest after a funeral ceremony. The grieving family stated in their statements following the incident that they had previously filed complaints against the suspect, Emrah Deniz, multiple times and had obtained restraining orders, saying, "If necessary precautions had been taken, our sister could be alive today."
“SHE WENT TO PICK UP HER DAUGHTER FROM SCHOOL”
A funeral ceremony was held for Semiha Deniz, who was shot and killed by her estranged husband Emrah Deniz while waiting in front of the school to pick up her daughter in the Seyyid Ömer neighborhood of Fatih. The ceremony was attended by Semiha Deniz's family, relatives, and local residents.
After the funeral prayer, Deniz's coffin was carried on the shoulders of women to the funeral vehicle. The young woman's funeral was buried at Sarıyer Kilyos Cemetery.
“MY SISTER OBTAINED RESTRAINING ORDERS MULTIPLE TIMES”
Semiha Deniz's brother, Yunus Deniz, stated that his sister had obtained restraining orders more than ten times, saying, "Each time she went to the courthouse and filed a complaint at police stations. Despite the assault and violence, and even though there were police raids at his home, every time she went to the courthouse, the police arrested him, but the prosecutor and judges released him again. She had been in the process of divorce for two months. There had been a lot of severe incompatibility before. The person already has more than seven criminal records. He had experienced similar incidents. He has a drug case. Despite having records for theft, robbery, and injury, he walks around freely."
“THE FATHER INCITED THE CRIME” ALLEGATION
Yunus Deniz, who is grieving the loss of his sister, claimed that the instigator of the incident was Emrah Deniz's father. Deniz said, "I took my sister home. He came to intimidate me and burned my motorcycle. The person who made him do this is his father. His father is also our uncle. He has told all my other uncles and aunts, 'Since my son is getting divorced, he has nothing to lose. There is a gun in the house.' He said the same thing two days ago. 'I am inciting him. I organized my son. I told him he would go and kill her.' Everyone had brought us news. 'Don't leave the house. Protect your daughter,' they said."
“HE THREATENED AGAIN AFTER LEAVING THE COURTHOUSE”
Yunus Deniz claimed that the suspect had previously been processed for violating the restraining order but was released.
"The upper court sentenced him to three days in prison for violating the restraining order at the courthouse, but they gave him the paper and told him he could surrender outside. After he left the courthouse, he threatened us again right in front of our eyes," Deniz said, adding, "The judge at the courthouse released him three days ago despite the incidents. Just yesterday, after violating the restraining order again at the courthouse, the upper court sentenced him to three days in prison, but they gave him the paper. 'Go, you can surrender whenever you want outside,' they said. He left the courthouse and threatened us again right in front of our eyes. I put my sister in a taxi, and we brought her home. While going to pick up their daughters from school, the father calls. 'He took the gun he kept at home, and now he went to shoot the girl,' he says. He also goes out. My two sisters go together. First, he assaults my other sister. He fires two shots but misses, hitting the school gate. Parents and teachers take my other sister inside. This time, my married sister is assaulted there. He drags her by her hair and intentionally shoots her in the head. By the time we got to the scene, my sister was already dead," he said.
HE ATTACKED IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL
Deniz stated that his sister was attacked when she went to the school to pick up her daughter, emphasizing that despite the area being very crowded at the time of the incident, no one intervened. Deniz said:
"There were a lot of people before the incident, but everyone was just watching. In front of everyone's eyes, on the street, in front of the school gate, all the parents were there, men and women, but there was no humanity. He is beating one person, taking another, dragging her by her hair, shooting her in the head. People are just watching. The ambulance arrived 30 minutes later."
Deniz expressed that they would take care of Semiha Deniz's two remaining children, saying, "Let no one think that we will leave the children in the hands of those monsters; we have already raised them ourselves."
“WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF HE GETS LIFE IMPRISONMENT NOW?”
Grieving brother Yunus Deniz emphasized that Semiha was killed by their uncle, who is her father-in-law, saying, "They attacked our home ten times. My sister obtained restraining orders twenty times from Aksaray police station, courthouses, and prosecutors, hired a lawyer. Despite all her efforts, the police catch him, and the prosecutor releases him.
They left him again. He came, killed the girl. Now, what will happen if he gets life imprisonment? The woman is dead. "If they had arrested him at first, due to that much violence, he would have received at least a few years, and my brother would be alive," he said.
