Hazelnut harvest has begun in the coastal areas of Giresun. Producers, stating that this year's yield will be below expectations, said, 'The rainy weather both delayed the ripening of the hazelnuts and caused some products to rot. Even though we carried out our spraying in the early periods, about half of the clusters are empty inside.'
Harvest has begun in the coastal areas of Giresun for hazelnuts, one of Turkey's important agricultural products. Producers who labored in their orchards throughout the year started collecting their hazelnuts with the first light of the morning.
Producers, who completed their preparations in the orchards before the harvest, have begun transporting the hazelnuts they collected to the threshing areas in sacks. The harvest, which started in the coastal areas, is expected to continue in orchards at mid and high altitudes in the coming days.
"PRICES COULD RISE ABOVE 300 LIRA"
Producers starting the hazelnut harvest hope that the price on the free market will rise above the announced base price. Reminding that last year hazelnuts found buyers above the announced price on the free market, producers state that this year's yield may fall below the announced estimates and that prices could rise above 300 lira.
"10 KILOS OF HAZELNUTS ONLY COVER A WORKER'S DAILY WAGE"
Hazelnut producer Nihat Öztürk drew attention to rising labor and production costs, stating that the announced price may be insufficient to cover producers' expenses. Öztürk said, "10 kilos of hazelnuts only cover a worker's daily wage. 50 kilos of hazelnuts only cover the cost of a worker doing orchard cleaning. The announced price may fall below cost. However, I think prices will rise on the free market."
"THE EXPECTED YIELD IS NOT THERE"
Producer Salih Demir stated that a significant portion of the hazelnuts on the branches fell before the harvest and therefore they do not expect more product than last year. Noting that the hazelnuts' ripening was delayed due to rainy weather, Demir said, "Due to rainy weather, the hazelnuts were a bit late this year. We started harvesting hazelnuts that haven't fully reddened yet. The rainy weather both delayed the ripening of the hazelnuts and caused some products to rot. Even though we did our spraying in the early periods, about half of the clusters are empty. Therefore, there is no expected yield."
The hazelnut harvest, which has started in the coastal areas of Giresun, is expected to intensify in orchards at mid and high altitudes in the coming days, depending on the ripening of the products.
