The grieving father of Sevcan Demir, whose husband Halit Can Sakman was killed with a knife two months ago, spoke out. Father Günay Demir stated that he initially did not give permission for his daughter's marriage, and that they did not speak for three months, but they reconciled because he loved her very much.
Halit Can and Sevcan Demir Sakman, who got married 2 months ago in Antalya but have not yet held a wedding, argued due to financial problems yesterday afternoon. When Halit Can Sakman returned home in the evening, another argument broke out between the parties. Halit Can Sakman killed Sevcan Demir Sakman, whom he claimed attacked him with a knife, by hitting her with a cleaver. Halit Can Sakman, who surrendered to the police, was arrested after being referred to the courthouse following his procedures. Sevcan Demir Sakman's funeral was held yesterday in her hometown of İskenderun, Hatay.
"HIS HANDS WERE TREMBLING, HIS EYES WERE DARK"
Grieving father Günay Demir began to accept condolences after burying his daughter. In statements to DHA, Günay Demir said that he did not approve of his daughter's marriage but accepted it because he loved her very much. He mentioned that he met his daughter and son-in-law while they were working in a nursing home, saying, "She came to me and said, 'Dad, I love a boy, I want to introduce him.' I accepted. She brought the boy and introduced him. The boy's hands were trembling, and his eyes were dark. He was taking pills or something else. After they left, I called my daughter and said, 'This is not good for you, don't do it,'” he said.
"I COULDN'T STAND IT, I TOOK HER TO THE BUS STATION AND SENT HER OFF"
Stating that his daughter did not listen to him, Demir said, "Because I loved my daughter very much, there was nothing I could do. Later, she said she had quit her job and found a job in Antalya and that she would go. I told her I wouldn't let her go. That boy had also resigned, and they had arranged a job together in Antalya. He said they would work in different hospitals and different accommodations and wouldn't see each other. As a father, I couldn't stand it, so I took my daughter to the bus station and sent her off, but out of my resentment and anger, I didn't speak for 3 months. Later, I called her, and she said she was fine. After that, we talked on the phone every day. The day before the incident, we spoke, and she was in good spirits, saying she was very happy. I asked if she needed anything since I would go to Antalya on Wednesday. We were going to organize something together since they hadn't held a wedding or engagement," he said.
"HOW AM I GOING TO ENDURE?"
Reacting to his daughter's murder, Günay Demir said, "I have another daughter. My daughter will go to the market, walk around, drink her coffee, and have friends. How will my daughter get married? Have people become this ruthless? How can you murder a person like this? How can you kill? We want to put an end to these femicides. How can you hit a woman? That person is a weak individual. How can he cut? This is inhumane. Our laws should punish this in the harshest way. Otherwise, new laws should be enacted. He didn't just kill my daughter. He butchered my daughter. That boy had a record. He was already mentally ill. How am I going to endure?" he said.
