The heavy toll of the genocide that has been ongoing in Gaza for a year.

07.10.2024 10:21

The Israeli army's attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip have been ongoing since October 7, 2023. The death toll has exceeded 41,000 in the first year of the genocide. 710 babies, who have not yet turned one year old, have lost their lives in the attacks, and there have even been fetuses recovered from the rubble. As a result of the attacks, the region, whose infrastructure has been destroyed, has become uninhabitable.

While Israel has massacred tens of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, indiscriminately bombing for a year without interruption, it has also destroyed the living spaces of those who managed to survive.

According to data announced by the Media Office of the government in Gaza on September 30, the Israeli army has committed approximately "3,650 massacres" during this year. In these massacres, 41,870 people lost their lives, including about 17,000 children, 11,378 women, and 13,000 men, while 97,166 people were injured. The bodies of 10,000 people who are either under the rubble or missing have still not been reached. In this context, children constituted 42% of the deceased, women 27%, and men 31%.

CHILDREN PAID THE HEAVIEST PRICE

The heaviest price for the Israeli attacks was paid by children. 171 babies born during the attacks died without even having a chance to live. 710 babies who had not yet turned 1 year old also lost their lives in the attacks. There were even fetuses recovered from the rubble. 25,973 children lost either one or both parents. In 7 mass graves uncovered in hospitals, the lifeless bodies of 520 Palestinians were found.

902 FAMILIES ERADICATED

In the Israeli attacks, hundreds of families lost all their members, while thousands managed to survive with only one or two members. According to a written statement from the Media Office dated October 2, during the genocide that has been ongoing for a year, 902 families whose all members died were erased from the population, while only one member survived in 1,364 families, and only two members survived in 3,472 families. By keeping the border crossings to the Gaza Strip closed for 5 months, Israel has imposed a strict blockade, using hunger, malnutrition, and lack of medicine as weapons against the surviving Palestinians. In one year, mostly children, 36 Palestinians died due to hunger and malnutrition. 3,500 children faced the risk of death due to malnutrition. 71,338 people contracted hepatitis due to constant displacement and migration, and 1,737,524 people fell ill with various epidemic diseases. 10,000 cancer patients are at risk of death at any moment due to the lack of treatment options in Gaza. The need for treatment outside Gaza arose for 12,000 injured Palestinians and 3,000 patients.

DOCTORS DIED DUE TO TORTURE

The Israeli army deliberately targeted hospitals and healthcare workers, disregarding international law. Thus, they deprived patients and injured Palestinians of their treatment options. As a result of the attacks, 34 hospitals and 80 health centers became non-operational, 162 health institutions were damaged, and 131 ambulances became unusable. 986 healthcare workers lost their lives, and 310 healthcare workers were detained. Some of the doctors detained by Israel died as a result of the torture they experienced in Israeli prisons. Among them were Adnan al-Bursh, one of the most renowned orthopedic surgeons in the region, and gynecologist Iyad al-Rantisi.

SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES WERE DESTROYED

One of the most significant aspects of the genocide carried out by Israel was the "genocide" applied to the education system. Israel deliberately destroyed schools and universities in Gaza, leaving a generation uneducated. According to Palestinian data, before October 7, 2023, there were 17 universities and colleges, as well as 796 schools with 800,000 students receiving education in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army completely destroyed 125 of these schools and partially destroyed 337. Thus, 93% of school buildings were completely or partially destroyed. According to the Media Office's data, as a result of Israeli attacks, 11,500 students of primary and secondary school age, 750 teachers, and 115 university professors and academics were killed.

INFRASTRUCTURE WAS DESTROYED

In one year, Israel used 85,000 tons of explosives, leaving no stone unturned in Gaza. In these attacks, homes, government buildings, historical artifacts, as well as electricity and water networks became unusable. According to the Media Office, 611 mosques were completely destroyed, 214 mosques were partially destroyed, 150,000 housing units were completely destroyed, 200,000 housing units were partially destroyed, and 80,000 housing units became unusable. 201 public offices, 206 historical artifacts and sites, and 3 churches were also targeted by Israeli attacks. 36 sports facilities and stadiums, as well as 700 water wells, became non-operational.

BODIES WERE STOLEN FROM GRAVES

The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs in Gaza announced on October 5 that 79% of the 1,245 mosques in Gaza had been destroyed, 19 out of 60 cemeteries had been deliberately and systematically targeted, graves had been dug up, dozens of bodies had been stolen, and their bodily integrity had been violated. The statement noted that 238 of the ministry's officials were killed by the Israeli army, and 19 were detained. In terms of infrastructure, 3,130 kilometers of electricity, 330,000 meters of water, 655,000 meters of sewage networks, and 2,835,000 meters of road networks were destroyed.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated on October 3 at the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Summit held in Doha, Qatar, under the title "Sports Diplomacy," that the Israeli army had "destroyed more than 90% of the infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, including sports facilities, in its savage genocide war."
